Director Tools

NovelAI Image Generation features a handy set of editing tools to make your life as an artist easier!

Introducing Director Tools.
You can find them in the Image Generation page, below the image settings. Enable or disable the Add Quality Tags toggle. From there, you can click the button to select an image to work on, then have at it with any Director Tool you want.

Here are our Director Tools:

Remove Background

First off, we have 'Remove BG', which, as the name implies, easily removes a background from any given picture, and even generates missing pieces.
This tool can also remove foreground elements or clutter that may be covering the character in focus.

This tool provides three different options of generations:
Masked: The result of using a generated image as a mask over the original image. This may feature some parts that were present in the image but shouldn't be present in a cutout (usually foreground elements.)
Generated: A completely ai-generated version that focuses on the removal of the background but filling in details, such as missing hair, or the aforementioned foreground elements which should not be a part of your cutout.
Blend: A mix of Masked and Generated. Useful for maintaining the overall feel of the original version, while also keeping the adjustments made by the ai-generated version. Be wary that sometimes it can have small artifacts in places the two versions differ heavily.

Goose Tip: All the options should look pretty similar, and you can freely swap back and forth between them after generating, so feel free to pick whichever you choose!

Line Art

Revert your image to the line art stage! Would you like to see the AI interpret the Line Art of your given image? Now you can!

Sketch

Create a sketch version of your art!. Peruse the very earliest conceptual iteration of a work. Maybe you can even learn a thing or two about the composition of your image!

Colorize

Ever find yourself with some line art and no idea what to do with it? Get a quick interpretation of how the AI would color it to fuel your inspiration!
You can even colorize images that are already in color, or use the prompt box to lead the AI to apply different clothing!

Colorize Defry: A setting that helps to reduce noise or colors turning up too strong in the final image. Particularly useful for coloring images that already have color.
Colorize Prompt: A prompt field for telling the AI what you want to see in the final image. Use the same tags used for normal imagegen. (i.e. red hair, blue eyes)

Emotion

Ever wanted to change the expression of a character? Working on your very own Visual Novel? Prepping a new profile picture but the expression just doesn't fit the mood? Now you can easily generate a wide range of emotions!

Emotion Level: A setting to define how strongly the AI will try to apply the selected emotion to the original image.
Emotion Prompt: A prompt field for telling the AI what you want to see in the final image. Use the same tags used for normal imagegen. (i.e. red eyes, fang)

Note that the Emotion tool works best when used on images that have a clear look of a single anime character's neutral face from the front. Recommended If your picture doesn't have a neutral expression, we recommend you to first turn a picture you have into a 'neutral expression' picture with the Emotion tool (it is designed to work with non-neutral expressions), and then using that as a base to generate other expressions.

Other things to note are that the changes are not limited to the face, low resolution images can have issues (Novel AI Diffusion V3 standard image gen resolutions and above will work well) and low contrast images can have issues (You can increase the contrast externally before using the image as base.)

Goose Tip: The Emotion tool makes it super easy to make a lively custom hypebot for your text generation escapades. See our handy custom hypebot here to see how you can implement any generated emotion images into your hypebot!

Declutter

Forgot to save an image in layers? Generated some pesky accidental text? Want to clean up a comic filled with annoying placeholder speech bubbles? No problem! The Declutter tool can trim any unwanted floating text, objects, or other visual noise from your image.

Don't forget that you can use images you create with any Director Tool as a basis to use with other Director Tools with a single click, with the  button located under a generated image on the right of the page.
The button is accessible under any image that you made previously, and that is still in the history tab.
